Samuel N. Graves, Jr. is a life-long resident of Southern Maryland. Born on October 17, 1951, he was elected as the County Commissioner from Commissioner District 1 in November 2006. Prior to his election as County Commissioner, he served in the US Army, then began his career with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office where he retired at the rank of Captain after 28 years of service. After retirement, he drove a bus for the Charles County Public School System.

Commissioner Graves, who was elected to his first term of office in 2006, has participated in a number of community organizations, including the Charles County Fair Board, the Charles County Farm Bureau, Charles County Freedom Landing, the Rotary Club of Charles County; the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, Christmas in April, Charles County, and the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Commissioner Graves is the Charles County Commissioner representative on the Area Council on Aging, the Board of Fire and Rescue, the Charles County Homeless and Emergency Shelter Committee, the Drug Council, and the Fire/EMS Scholarship Committee.

He and his wife, Betsy, have been married for more than 30 years. They live near La Plata and have two daughters, Sarah and Amy, who were both educated in Charles County public schools and graduated from Maryland State colleges.
