Guidelines for Charles County Commissioners Nursing/Allied Health
Scholarship
A program of scholarships for courses leading to the certificate,
diploma, or other evidence of qualification to practice on completion
of specialized training in the medical field has been established
by the Charles County Commissioners pursuant to the Public Local
Laws of Charles County, Article 9, Section 76.
Scholarships under this section shall be awarded to those persons
who are (1) residents of Charles County; (2) who make application
to the County Commissioners of Charles County, at such time and
places and in a manner to be determined an announced by the County
Commissioners; (3) whose applications are reviewed and favorably
recommended by a Scholarship Committee appointed by the County
Commissioners; (4) who are selected by the County Commissioners
after such review and recommendation by the Scholarship Committee
on the basis of demonstrated aptitude, interest and ability, financial
need, and cumulative grade point average; and (5) who furnish surety
bonds to the County Commissioners of Charles County, in such amount
and with such surety as the Commissioners may determine, the condition
of the bonds shall be that the applicant, provided he/she completes
the course of study for which the scholarship is awarded, practices
in his/her field in Charles County for a period of not less than
two years within a period, following completion of such course
of study, of three years extended by the duration of any military
service of the applicant commencing in such three year period.
Nursing/Allied Health scholarship recipients shall practice at
Civista Medical Center, the Charles County Health Department, any
Charles County Long Term Care Facility, Community Social Work Agencies,
Hospice Facilities, Charles County Public Schools, home health
care in Charles County, or private practitioners in Charles County.
Should the applicant not complete the course of study or fulfill
the two-year employment requirement as specified, he/she shall
be required to pay to the County a sum of money equal to the total
dollar amount of the funds expended by the County in connection
with said scholarship on such terms and conditions to which the
County might hereinafter agree. The Scholarship Committee shall
include a Doctor of Medicine, an educator, a nurse, and ordained
minister, a County Commissioner, and one other person. All members
of this Committee shall be full-time residents of Charles County
and shall serve staggered terms.
AWARDS. Scholarships shall be awarded under this section for
study at any accredited institution within Maryland, Virginia or
the District of Columbia, offering courses of instruction in the
scholarship holder's field of study. The amount and number of scholarships
shall be recommended by the Scholarship Committee to the County
Commissioners who shall make the final determination of the amount
of said scholarship and the number approved for each calendar year.
The recipient of said scholarship shall be required to resubmit
an application and original transcripts for each year the scholarship
is requested by the individual and determination shall be made
at that time by the Committee/Commissioners for renewal. |
