Nursing and Rehabilitative Centers/Nursing Homes
Nursing and rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes are typically reserved for persons whose daily care needs exceed what can be provided in other senior housing choices. Nursing homes offer:
Each nursing home also has a social work department to address the non-medical needs of residents. Private and semi-private rooms are offered. Amenities include a main dining room, activity rooms, beauty parlor, as well as occupational and physical therapy. Often, an individual enters a nursing home from a hospital for short-term rehabilitation under Medicare. However, Medicare does not pay for long-term care in a nursing home.
Individuals requiring long-term care may apply for Medical Assistance to subsidize the nursing home fee. Medical Assistance may be available if an individual meets both the medical eligibility for nursing home placement and financial guidelines. Applications for Medical Assistance may be completed at the Department of Social Services.
The Area Agency on Aging offers resident advocacy services to nursing home and assisted living residents.
