The Recreation Division is responsible for providing recreational and leisure time experiences for Charles County citizens, including trips and tours, therapeutic programs, discount tickets at local amusement parks, indoor sports programs, aquatics programs, part-time/seasonal employment, and programs and offerings at the Elite Gymnastics & Recreation Center.
Below is a list of the many services offered by the Department of Community Services' Recreation Division. Use the links to the right to visit those pages.
Aquatics - Recreation operates a year-round indoor pool at Lackey High School. During the summer months, we also operate outdoor pools at La Plata, McDonough, and Thomas Stone. All pools are open to the public for recreational swimming with daily admission or memberships available. We offer numerous programs including swim lessons, pool rentals, water aerobics, lifeguard training, and more.
Discount Tickets - Prices for tickets are discounted 10-15% off the regular gate prices at Six Flags/Great Adventure, Hershey Park, King's Dominion, Sesame Place, Six Flags/New Jersey, and Busch Gardens Water Country.
Elite Gymnastics & Dance Recreation Center - This state-of-the-art facility provides an unequalled facility for instruction in gymnastics and dance. Classes range from beginner to advanced, and pre-competitive and competitive teams through 10 levels under the guidance of the USA Gymnastics Jr. Olympic Program. Many general recreational programs are also offered throughout the year.
Indoor Sports Programs & Leagues - Recreation offers a noncompetitive youth basketball and soccer program. Adult basketball and volleyball leagues for women, men, and co-ed are also offered. Adult basketball leagues are offered during the winter.
Summer Camp Programs - The Charles County Department of Community Services offers many summer camp programs for children. From gymnastics to sports, there is a camp to meet the needs and interests of most children. Camps generally operate from the end of June to the beginning of August. Therapeutic Programs - These programs offer cultural and social enrichment for developmentally disabled youth and special needs adults. A summer day camp (Camp Co-Op) for special education students age 5-21 with moderate to severe disabilities is also offered.
Trips & Tours - Trip registrants have the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiences. Fees cover admission, transportation, and administrative expenses. Senior citizen trips are offered monthly to accommodate seniors throughout the county.
