Soccer
Soccer is
probably the world's most popular sport for children and adults
around the world. Similarly, it is one of the most popular sports
for Special Olympics athletes. Charles County has seven 5 a-side
Unified Sports ® teams at the elementary school level.
Unified sports®
allows athletes with and without mental retardation to train and
compete on the same team.
Special Olympics
offers four playing formats in the Soccer program.
Individual
Skills: designed for athletes with lower ability levels or
are not able to compete on a team. Athletes are run thru a series
of three events (dribbling, shooting, and run and kick). The athlete
is awarded points for each event. The points are added together
to get a total score.
5 a-side team
play
7 a-side team play
11 a-side team play
Unified play
is offered in each of the three team sports.
Soccer is
contested at the Special Olympics Maryland Fall Sports Fest held
the last weekend in October. See the Calendar for dates and times.
