Charles County worked with residents to add nitrogen removal units to 35 on-site septic systems between November 2007 and November 2008 using grant funding from the Bay Restoration Fund. The Charles County Department of Health has received a second grant from the Bay Restoration Fund for $900,000 to install an additional 60-65 nitrogen removal units.
Statewide, almost 1,300 units have been installed as of August 2009. These units are expected to keep about 27,500 pounds of nitrogen from entering the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries each year.
How is nitrogen harmful to the Chesapeake Bay? Visit Maryland's BayStat Website for more information.
Charles County Government actively pursues grant funding from a variety of federal, state, and foundation sources as part of a mixed-funding approach to support County programs and operations that serve the public. Funds from grants serve a wide variety of needs in the community, from providing necessary citizen services such as housing assistance and programs for seniors, to funding capital needs such as parks and public transportation.
In Fiscal Year 2009, the County expended $13,260,582 from 89 Federal grants, $11,285,445 from 78 State grants and $737,506 from 14 miscellaneous foundation and governmental assistance programs.
Grant Policy for The Procurement, Administration, and Disposition of Grants
Charles County Government awards grants to non-profit and government agencies who provide services to Charles County residents. Funding for these requests is considered during the budget cycle, with applications due to the County in early January. The award process is initiated with the Application for Grants Awarded By the County Commissioners.
In addition to the funds awarded in conjunction with the budget cycle, funds may also be awarded to non-profit and government agencies, on an as needed basis, throughout the County’s fiscal year (July 1 through June 30), in amounts not to exceed $2,500. These requests for funding are also initiated with the Application for Grants Awarded By the County Commissioners. Grant agreements are not required as a condition of obtaining this funding; however, the County Commissioners, at their discretion, reserve the right to refer any request to staff and/or an advisory panel.
